I think the very most interesting thing about this song is the drums. They are weird, to be sure. But that's not what makes them interesting...exactly. You see, at the time when I was recording this song, I didn't really know how to play drums. I had recently purchased a crappy 1970's drum set from a no-name vendor from a family whose kids were all grown up and they decided they didn't want it anymore. I bought it because at the time my first PPTKO band was forming up and Nathan Thompson didn't have a drum set of his own. We needed a set to practice on so I went and bought it used. It is actually a pretty good set I guess for the price I paid. Things were made better back in those days. I recorded all of blue and all of Contagion on it. So, after having owned the set for about three weeks I set out to record "as it burns". I had gotten good enough to at least hit the drums at what PASSES as the right time. Close enough anyway. I had no idea what I was doing, only an idea of what maybe I should be doing so I just did it. Besides that tidbit, this song is also a bit odd in other ways. It's obviously very dismal and satiristic. I personally really like the imagery. The saddest point of all is that ultimately I do realize that I myself am just as horrible as anyone else. A wise man once said that the purpose for having literature expose the darker sides of humanity is that it elucidates them and allows a starting point for change. I go back and forth on that. But here is a little match to light the face of our shared iniquities. Cheers.
